Week 1: What is a parkour gym, really?

In 4th grade, I had a teacher who was REALLY into the “Six Questions”: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How. She drilled them into us. Made us tell stories by answering them. Made us create projects using the questions as a sort of verbal ‘Four Color Rule’. I have found it extremely helpful, even decades late, with tackling large projects.

With the questions as a framework, I am going to start breaking down this project into smaller, manageable pieces. So, ‘Who’ is obvious. Me. Or more exacting, my choices and resources. ‘Where’ and ‘When’ will be answered later. ‘How’ is pretty much this entire blog. So that leave two questions that I want to tackle now.

First is ‘Why’.

Parkour is an outdoor sport. Once beginners have gotten over the people-are-looking-at-me jitters training outdoor becomes very rewarding, and indeed some practitioners come to enjoy jumping in public. However outdoors also pose some changes to training, such as being kicked from a spot, inability to scale down some challenges, difficulty in finding places suitable for particular skills. A properly designed indoor gym provides the solutions these issues and provides the extra benefit of building a community. I will go into more detail of ‘Why’ in a future post.

‘What’

Ok, so what exactly is a parkour gym? If you have never been to a parkour gym imagine a large space with large blocky
